2 tier refers to fat clients and 3 tier refers to fat servers in a client / server architecture. Fat client serve as vivid descriptions of the type of client/server systems in place. In a client system, more of the processing takes place in the client, like with a file server or database server . Fat servers place more emphasis on the server and try to minimize the processing done by the clients. Example of fat servers is transaction, groupware and the web servers.
